In Memoriam: Remembering Dr. Joyce Newman Giger

Joyce Newman Giger, EdD, APRN-BC, FAAN, a transformative nurse researcher and professor emerita in the UCLA School of Nursing, passed away March 28, 2025, at the age of 74.
A dedicated educator, researcher, and nurse leader, Dr. Newman Giger’s contributions transformed how nurses provide care. The Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural Assessment Model shaped the way nurses approach health care across cultures, emphasizing empathy, understanding, and respect for all.
Dr. Newman Giger was the first African American tenured professor in the UCLA School of Nursing’s history and served as the Lulu Wolf Hassenplug Endowed Chair. Her influence extended beyond UCLA – as a Retired Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, a mentor to students and faculty across the country, and a leader recognized as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Newman Giger was also the 2024 recipient of the National Black Nurses Association’s President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. and will be live streamed. Memories and photographs can be shared through an online obituary.
